(3) 譯註：本書外國人所用的中文名字，謹說明如下：有慣用漢名者（如一些漢學家和香港殖民地官員），書中會盡量沿用。一些殖民地時代早期的人物，沒有標準中文譯名的，會參照當時中文報章的譯法。完全找不到漢譯名者，則採用中國大陸的譯名準則處理。
(4) 對於已問世的著述，近年有人做過很有用的回顧，見Johnson 2000。文獻資料包括三百七十五種用英文寫的書、論文和文章，中文的三十五種，日文的九種，還有一些文獻是她當時所不知道的。據Johnson 2005。
